tonight’s triumph

As someone who is genuinely interested in emerging technology, it was only a matter of time before I procured the latest “it” gadget – the iPhone 3G.

Yes, this little black book has been constantly in the news for some quite some time now, between trying to find some use for the “outdated” version from last year, controversy regarding international ads (although it’s noteworthy that there even are international ads), and with companies of all types and sizes trying to piggyback on the phone’s success.

Well, I had waited patiently, and even though the whole ordeal of upgrading the family’s current AT&T plan, as well as adding my line, took almost two hours, my spirits were as high as Snoop Dog in Half Baked.

As I left the store, I noticed that I wasn’t able to connect to the internet. No worries. When this continued, I called AT&T just too make sure that everything had been set up correctly. As I explained my situation to the woman on the other end of the line, my phone began to work…. everything except Gmail, which I had – unsuccessfully apparently – set up. (I could get to through the web browser, but not through the fun little “mail” icon on the home screen).

I tried deleted and recreating the accounts. I tried turning the phone on and off. I tried not touching the phone will the mailbox was loading. You get the idea…

Long story short, (not so short though, I guess), I finally got my lazy self to the computer and did some research. Apparently:
1. You need to set up the Gmail account as “Other”, not as “Gmail”. (Rather backwards, isn’t it?)
2. You need to make sure that in Gmail, “Don’t always use https” is checked under the General Settings Tab.
3. You need to go to some crazy website – – to “unlock” your account!

The full discussion that saved the day is here. It’s funny how much better I immediately felt knowing that I hadn’t caused the error!

I LOVE the iPod and Google because I feel like they both have changed the way that we live our lives, but it was such as shame that my first experience with brand new iPhone was so negative. It shouldn’t have taken all evening to get e-mail working!

An Introduction… or a Conclusion

It’s been more than two years since I’ve returned from my European travels, and I’m amazed that this blog is still relevant to readers worldwide. From queries for “biere maximator” to “i met bill buckner”, my blog somehow stumbles into the mix.

I hope that you’ve found what you are looking for here; if not, safe travels. Either way, I welcome and will respond – to the best of my ability- to all comments. Hopefully, I can provide some useful information!

Redoing My Bedroom… And My Blog

The people who know me best will tell you that sometimes I’m 1. too much of a perfectionist, 2. concentrate too much on the really small things. And while I am trying to learn to just let it go, I do think that these personality work in my favor at times…

I’ve been wanted to start blogging again for a while, but crazy as it sounds, I wanted to find the perfect blog look/feel before I ventured back into this world of online amateur journalism/journaling.

I would equate it to the making of one’s bed. A room can be in complete disarray, but one of my roommates, Sarah, pointed out, it looks a whole lot better once the bed is made, so that’s where you should start.

Anyway, props to:, which is a website filled with blogger template options and where I found the clean, crisp, calm one you see here.

Now that I’ve “made my bed”, it makes me want to jump right in!

PS. On a somewhat related note, I’m redoing my bedroom. I’ve realized that while red/black/white is a really sleek and modern color scheme, it probably belongs in a living room or kitchen more than a bedroom, which should be soothing and calming. So I’m looking into colors like green, blue, lilac… I’ve been searching for the perfect bed linens without success. Hopefully I’ll find something that fits my needs, and is clean, crisp, and calm. Just like this blog.
